People and Place – A Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal was launched by in 2003 by the Department for Social Development. The strategy aims to improve the quality of life of the people who live in the most deprived neighbourhoods.
10% of the most deprived neighbourhoods across Northern Ireland identified by the Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure (Noble Index) are targeted by the strategy. There are 3 area identified in Craigavon.
Based on a community planning approach, the Strategy offers a joined up system between Government Departments, statutory bodies and other service providers.
Neighbourhood Partnerships, comprising community and statutory representatives, are the vehicle for local planning and implementation.
In Craigavon, there are 3 Neighbourhood Renewal Partnerships –
- Brownlow
- Lurgan
- Portadown
Each Partnership has developed a progressive vision and long-term action plan for the area. Implementation of the Action Plans is underway and addresses 4 key themes
- Economic Renewal
- Social Renewal
- Community Renewal
- Physical Renewal
Council’s Development Department facilitates delivery of the programme at local level on behalf of Department for Social Development. Council also provides a secretariat for the 3 Partnerships.
