Good Relations

Craigavon Borough Council is committed to promoting and developing positive relationships within the Borough using an integrated community development approach to foster good relations.

All aspects of work are underpinned by statutory obligations, under Section 75 of the NI Act 1998, to promote equality of opportunity and good relations. The governments Shared Future document, published in 2005, presents a strategic and policy framework for good relations in NI. A key strategic aim within the paper sets out establishing over time 'a shared society defined by a culture of tolerance: a normal, civic society, in which all individuals are considered as equals, where differences are resolved through dialogue in the public sphere and where all individuals are treated impartially'.

In keeping with government policy Council have developed a strategic plan for the Borough with 5 key strategic aims to increase community involvement and cohesion.

1. To engage in the process of mainstreaming the Good Relations agenda with council members and staff
2. To work towards reducing community tensions, visible manifestations of sectarianism and reclaiming shared space
3. To promote Good Relations through community development whilst tackling disadvantage
4. To support Good Relations and Race relations through diversity and cultural diversity

5. To raise awareness of the Good Relations Programme and Grant Aid for supporting good relations work.

Each strategic aim details specific projects which can accessed in full by clicking on Good Relations Action Plan 2009-11. Projects within the plan have received financial support from the Community Relations Unit, OFMDFM.
