Graves
The Council appreciates that the preparation of funeral arrangements is a difficult time for families and will endeavour to be as helpful as possible during this time. However, there are some rules governing the administration of cemeteries which must be adhered to as outlined below:
Interments (Burials)
Interments can only take place on the authorisation of the Cemetery office upon request of the titleholder. Plots are dug to nine feet and will allow for up to three interments of a standard sized coffin. The cemetery office usually requires two working days notice for the preparation of the burial plot.
All funerals must arrive at the cemetery between the hours of 10am and 3.30pm. However, the cemetery will remain open during the hours of daylight should families wish to visit the grave.
Transfers /Assignments
When a grave is purchased, the purchasers name and address is entered in to the register as Titleholder for the specified plot and they receive a title deed certificate. The titleholder of the Burial plot is then conferred the right to up to three internments (burials) per plot. Please note the purchase of the plot does not mean that the person has purchased the land, only the right to internment.
The grave may be assigned by the titleholder during their lifetime to their nominated successor. If this is not undertaken, on the death of the titleholder, the title may only be transferred to a successor (family member) with the written consent of any other family members who may have a claim to the grave. Please note that the Council can only accept a request for an internment from the titleholder and can only grant permission to a living titleholder for the erection of memorials. This means that should a titleholder pass away without assigning the grave to a successor, there may be a delay in using the grave for burials until such time as a formal deed transfer can be carried out with the agreement of all necessary family members. In addition the Council will only be able to contact the titleholder from their last known address. It is therefore recommended that the deed for graves is assigned or transferred as soon as possible to avoid any upset to bereaved families.
To obtain more information on these procedures please do not hesitate to contact the Cemetery Manager or Superintendent at Kernan Cemetery Tel: 028 3833 9059.
Lawn Type Cemeteries
The Council operates two lawn type cemeteries at
- Kernan Cemetery - Section B
- Lurgan Cemetery - Section M
These cemeteries are laid out and developed on the "Lawn System" which provides for a space at the head of each grave for the planting of flowers and/or the erection of a headstone. This space is four feet wide by 2 feet 6 inches deep. The remaining portion of each grave is sown out in grass which will be left clear of any vases, holders or other additions in order to facilitate grass cutting throughout the cemetery. No wreaths, including grass wreaths, will therefore be permitted to remain on a grave for more than 4 weeks after the date of burial.
Headstones
Every effort is made to accommodate individual memorial wishes of families, however, it is necessary to ensure that the size and type of memorials are appropriate to their setting. Therefore all memorials (headstones) must be approved by the Cemeteries office prior to erection, including the proposed inscription.
Cemetery Charges
Graves may be purchased directly from Kernan Cemetery or via your undertaker. Plots are only sold at internment at which time titleholders may purchase up to three plots allowing for the equivalent of a maximum of nine burials.
