Safe Maintenance 2011
Craigavon Borough Council, in partnership with Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI), wants to ensure that the risks to people's health and safety arising from work activities are effectively controlled. That's why campaigns such as Safe Maintenance are vital to improving the overall safety and well being of the Northern Ireland workforce.
Too often, setting out to fix or repair machinery or plant can lead to needless death and injury. Indeed, during the past year, 30% of all workplace fatalities were related to maintenance.
Maintenance can take many forms and involve working at height or using hazardous chemicals. It should never be approached lightly but carefully planned. In the final analysis, safe maintenance saves time, saves money and saves lives.
The campaign's message will be reinforced during inspections by both the council and HSENI. Particular emphasis will be given to exposure to asbestos, working at heights and locking out machinery.

Open Farm Visits
Visits to open farms, agricultural shows and mobile petting farms etc play a valuable part in the education and
development of children and young adults, and provide an enjoyable experience for many people.
It is unusual for members of the public to be made ill as a result of such visits. However, there have been a relatively small number of serious cases of ill health reported as a consequence of visits to these premises.
Further information is available in the documents below:
Preventing or controlling ill health from animal contact at visitor attractions (HSENI Info Sheet No. 1/11). (Includes a supplement for teachers and others who organise visits for children.)
