One person can make a difference, and every person must try - John F. Kennedy

There are many simple steps you can take to become more sustainable helping the environment as well as saving you money.

At home

  • Turn your TV off rather than leave it on stand-by - equipment on stand-by uses up to 20% of the energy it would use when fully on.
  • Turn your heating down - reducing your thermostat by 1 degree Celsius will knock 10% off your heating bill
  • Use energy efficient light bulbs (CFL's) instead of traditional bulbs - they use 1/5th energy and last up to 10 times as long. To run an energy saving bulb only costs 6p a day, while a standard one is 24p a day!
  • Insulate your attic - attic insulation will keep the heat in your home for longer and pay for itself in 2-3 years.
  • Buy 'A' rated kitchen appliances - they cost less to run and over time will give you considerable savings on your electricity bill.

At work

  • Remember to switch off lights and heating in the office when they're not in use, and particularly in meeting rooms or unoccupied service areas.
  • Turn your computer off at night and the monitor at lunch instead of leaving it on will save on average 25% of its annual energy bill.
  • Turn off your computer whenever you are not going to use it for more than an hour. And remember that all of this applies to your home computer too.
  • Take advantage of natural daylight as much as possible and use task lighting where appropriate.

In the Car

  • Drive at the speed limit. Driving you car sensibly with the REVs between 1500 and 2500 can not only save your life it will cut emissions by 20% and reduce fuel consumption by 15%. Saving you money!

It is estimated that it takes 21 days to change a behaviour or habit. By making small changes such as these you will be both helping the environment and saving you household money!

Small changes today will mean less big changes tomorrow.
