Recycling RatesBin Collection

Craigavon Borough Council would like all residents to recycle as much waste as possible. Over 30,000 properties in the Borough participate in the Green Bin Recycling Scheme collecting 5076 tonnes of waste paper, cardboard, plastic bottles & cans in 2009/2010.

To increase the amount that Craigavon recycles the Council introduced brown bins for collecting garden waste such as grass, leaves and twigs for composting. In total 19,000 bins have been distributed and from April 09 - March 10, 3082 tonnes of garden and kitchen waste was collected and composted.

For information on the green bins or brown bins please click here to be taken to our Lets Get Sorted web pages www.letsgetsorted.net.

Many more items can be recycled at our recycling centres including wood and garden waste. Over 7000 tonnes of grass and dead plants were processed into compost last year.

Below is a table showing material recycled through Newline and Fairgreen Recycling Centres from April 2009 until March 2010.

While the Council is delighted at the success of the recycling schemes currently on offer there is still more waste dumped in Landfill than is recycled. In fact over 40,000 tonnes of waste is collected from the blue bins in the Craigavon area every year. That's over 1 tonne per household. This material is disposed of at various landfill sites across Northern Ireland at considerable cost to our ratepayers. From April 09- March 10 36% of waste was recycled and composted in Craigavon Borough.

We should all try to reduce waste to decrease the disposal costs and to protect our environment.

All of the trips and visits focus on our Reduce, Reuse and Recycle theme and the work of our waste management department.

We offer three main education packages to schools / groups:

2. Talk on Food Waste and tips on reducing your food bill

This talk helps people identify waste within their kitchens and is a call to action. This sessions usually lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.

3. Trips to our recycling centres Visits to our recycling centre at Newline, Lurgan,

see how our waste is managed and learn where our materials go to be reprocessed or recycled. See first hand how well used the sites are and learn what happens to that old bottle of cooking oil!

The visits usually last between 30 and 45 minutes.

All groups must arrange their own transport to the recycling centre

4. Ongoing School Competitions and projects

Every year Council engage with the local Primary schools for participation in a number of projects and competitions to develop the waste message and encourage local children to bring the message home to parents and friends.
