Nuisance Parking

Nuisance Parking is covered under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act (Northern Ireland) 2011.

The Act covers two offences, namely:

(1) Section 2:- Exposing vehicles for sale on a road.  This applies to a business selling two or more cars on the road or roadside less than 500m apart.

(2) Section 3:- Repairing vehicles on a road.  This applies to a business repairing a vehicle(s) on the roadside.

The legislation does not, as the title might suggest, refer to private individuals for instance parking a vehicle outside your house every night, Nor does it apply to someone parking a caravan or lorry outside your house for prolonged periods, or in such a position as to block an exit or restrict turning space.  These are not offences which are dealt with by local Councils.  Obstruction on a public road is a matter for the PSNI and/or DRD Roads Servive.

Abandoned Vehicles

If a vehicle has been abandoned on a public road, that is to say it has been left for a prolonged period of time, is untaxed and not insured, and is in such condition as may be deemed suitable to be destroyed, then it is classed as abandoned. This type of offence can be dealt with by local Council, but should in the first instance be reported to the PSNI. Telephone 0845 600 8000.

The Council now provides an Irish and Ulster Scots voicemail service for any member of the public who wishes to ring using these languages. Simply ring the Council and ask to be put through to the service.  You will then hear a voicemail message in that language and be asked to leave your message.  We will then have your message translated and a response sent.
