Sports Development Unit

Our Service

The Sports Development unit strives to work with others to ensure that everyone in the borough has the opportunity to take part in sport and physical activity to the level they have the desire or ability to reach. The sports development unit has a close working relationship with Craigavon Sports Advisory Council in relation to the development of sport locally.

What We Do

Main services provided by the sports development unit in partnership with C.S.A.C include the provision of:

  • Training for club, coach and physical activity leader development
  • Provision of opportunities to participate
  • Provision of opportunities to improve performance
  • Opportunity to impact on health and well being of inhabitants of the borough
  • Recognition of and support of voluntary effort
  • Recognition of and support of talented performers

We value the impact sport can have, when it is used to engage and develop an individuals self esteem and a community’s capacity to engage with its residents.

Partnerships

In partnership with C.S.A.C, key agencies and governing bodies, the sports development unit works on three key areas

  • Starting well e.g. Youth Sport South, Craigavon, What to do for Boys and Girls Summer programme, and Fit for Life Scheme.
  • Staying involved e.g. Over 50’s clubs, Grants for coach education, and recognising the work of volunteers
  • Striving for Excellence e.g. the southern sports academy, the Craigavon school of sport and Grants, Bursaries and a sports training scheme for talented individuals.

Active Communities to create 100,000+ sporting opportunities across the region

Active Communities is a new Sport Northern Ireland funded programme that aims to increase participation in sport and physical activity by increasing the number of full time and part time coaches working with schools, clubs and community groups in the region.  In particular it will aim to increase participation amongst under represented groups including females, people with a disability and older people.

Multi-sports coaches and physical activity leaders appointed through the programme will be working throughout the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon consortium area delivering activities including outdoor pursuits, Gaelic games, disability sports, soccer, volleyball and physical activity.  Currently we have six full time coaches employed and actively delivering within the consortium and hope to appoint a further four coaches within the next few months.  These new coaches will specialise in activities such as racquet sports, athletics and dance (2 posts).
