By law all deaths occurring in Northern Ireland must be registered in Northern Ireland no later than five days from the date of death - except where the matter has been referred to the coroner. This is free and can be done in the Registrar's Office in the district where they normally lived.

Registering a death in Craigavon is very simple and no appointment is needed.

Registrar’s Office opening hours

Monday to Thursday: 9am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 4.30pm

Friday: 9am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 4pm.

WHO CAN REGISTER A DEATH?

  • Any relative of the deceased (including a relative by marriage) who has knowledge of the particulars required to be registered
  • Any person present at the death
  • Any person taking care of the funeral arrangements
  • The Executor or Administrator of the deceased's estate
  • The occupier (governor, matron, superintendent or other Chief Officer) at the time of death of the premises
  • A person finding the body
  • A person taking charge of the body

WHAT INFORMATION DO I NEED TO BRING?

You will need to fill in a death registration form.  You can download a copy of this here: Death Registration Form

You will also need to provide:

  • full name, surname and address of the deceased
  • date and place of death (and birth)
  • marital status
  • occupation of the deceased (if they were a wife or widow, the full name and occupation of her husband or deceased husband is needed)
  • maiden surname, if the deceased was a woman who was married
  • if the deceased was a child, the full names and occupation of the father, or where the parents are not married, the full name and occupation of the mother
  • A Medical Certificate of Cause of Death issued by a doctor who has treated the deceased within 28 days before the date of death. If the deceased had not been seen by a doctor within that period or where the death was not caused by natural illness the case would have been referred to the Coroner – the Registrar or Funeral Director will then advise you.

Please note that a registration cannot easily be changed once completed.

WHAT WILL I RECEIVE?

Once the death is registered, you will receive a GRO 21 form which allows a burial or cremation to take place and a Form 36 (certificate of registration of death) for social security purposes if the deceased received a state pension or benefits.

Additional certificates, which may be needed when sorting out the deceased's affairs, may be purchased at the time of registration for £8 per copy.
