Step back in time to experience what life was like during the war with blackouts, wartime food, the Home Guard and women’s contribution to the war effort.

Craigavon Borough Council’s Museum Services is hosting an exhibition “Oh do you know there is a war on?” The exhibition is a visual journey through the Home Front in Craigavon 1939-1945 using photographs and artefacts from the time.

The exhibition reflects the thoughts and impact of evacuees, rationing, war time food and how people coped in daily life. There will be lots of wartime memorabilia, artefacts, films and posters on display, telling the stories of local people and their experience of the Home Front.

Museums service is also making part of the exhibition more accessible by bringing it outside to groups through two accompanying outreach programmes. The first is a 1940s loan box for use with groups which is £5.00 for hire. This box contains all sorts of fascinating objects from the 1940s and can be used for reminiscence.

There is also a Life on the Home Front outreach session for primary schools. The cost is £35.00 for a two hour session and this is delivered in the classroom, using replica objects which pupils can explore.

Advance booking is essential for both these programmes.

The display runs from 11th November 2011 to 25th February 2012 at Waterside House, Oxford Island and will be open Mon-Sat between 10am and 4pm. Admission to the exhibition is free.

Groups are also welcome to book tours of the exhibition by booking through the museum.
